Suiting Up for the First Time: Finding the Perfect Suit for Your Son
Shopping for guys’ senior picture outfits can feel weirdly harder than it should be.
With girls, people expect to think about outfits, accessories, shoes, layers, and all the little details. With guys, there’s often this assumption that they can just throw something on and call it good. But when you want senior pictures to feel polished, timeless, and truly special, what he wears matters more than most people realize.
And honestly? A great suit, blazer, or dressy layered look can completely transform the way a guy feels in front of the camera.
I know that firsthand because I’ve done this with my own son, Trevor, more than once.
When it was time for his high school senior pictures, I took him to buy his first real suit. Then later, when college graduation photos rolled around, we found ourselves doing it again. This time, his look included a vest, and it felt even more polished, grown up, and refined. Both times, we ended up at Jos. A. Bank.
At this point, Jos. A. Bank has become my go-to not just for Trevor, but for my husband too. It’s the place I send the men in my life when they need something polished, well-fitted, and classic.

Why Shopping Matters More for Guys Than People Think
A lot of moms start out thinking their son just needs “something nice.”
And sure, that’s not wrong.
But there’s a huge difference between something that is technically nice and something that actually photographs well.
The right outfit can:
- Make a guy look more confident
- Photograph in a cleaner, sharper way
- Elevate the entire look of the session
- Feel timeless instead of trendy
- Give variety if you’re mixing dressy and casual outfits
For a lot of teen guys, this is also one of the first times they’ve worn something more tailored. And once they see themselves in a jacket that actually fits well, everything changes. Their posture changes. Their expression changes. Their whole energy changes.
I’ve seen it with my clients, and I saw it with Trevor too.
Why Jos. A. Bank Has Been My Go-To
When Trevor needed his first real suit for high school senior pictures, I knew I wanted something classic. I didn’t want trendy for the sake of trendy. I wanted him to look like himself, just elevated a little. Sharp. Timeless. Confident.
So we headed to Jos. A. Bank, and it ended up being one of those mom moments you don’t forget.
They measured him properly, guided us through the fit, helped narrow down the options, and pulled pieces we probably never would have chosen on our own. Once he started trying things on, it all got easier. The right jacket changed everything. He could see it, and so could I!

Then years later, when we were shopping for his college graduation look, we went right back.
This time, his outfit included a vest, and it was such a good reminder that a great menswear store doesn’t just help for one milestone. It can grow with them. His college look felt even more polished and mature, but still classic. Still him. Still something that would photograph beautifully and hold up over time.
That’s a big part of why Jos. A. Bank has stayed my go-to. It has worked for both the “first real suit” stage and the more refined college look too.
What to Look for When Shopping for Guys Senior Picture Outfits
Not every guy needs a full suit, but if you’re shopping for senior pictures, these are the things I would pay attention to first.
Fit comes before almost everything
This is the biggest one.
A great fit will always photograph better than an expensive outfit that hangs wrong. Sleeves, shoulders, pant length, jacket shape, and overall structure make a huge difference in photos.
Even a simple blazer and slacks combo can look incredible when it fits properly.
Classic usually wins
Trends come and go, but senior pictures tend to live on walls, in albums, and on graduation announcements for years.
That doesn’t mean the outfit has to feel boring. It just means it should still look good later.
Navy, charcoal, black, soft blue, crisp white, and other timeless tones usually work beautifully.
Structure photographs well
Blazers, suit coats, vests, and tailored button-downs tend to photograph really nicely because they add shape and polish.
That little bit of structure helps create a more elevated final image without making the session feel stiff.
Personality still matters
Classic doesn’t mean generic.
Some guys want the full suit and tie. Some feel more like themselves in a blazer with open collar. Some want the vest. Some want a more relaxed second look.
The goal is not to dress him like someone else. The goal is to help him look like the very best version of himself.

Best Pieces to Shop for
If you’re trying to figure out where to start, these are the pieces I’d look at first:
- a well-fitted suit
- a blazer that can be dressed up or down
- a crisp button-down shirt
- a vest for extra polish and layering
- a tie or bow tie if that fits his style
- fitted slacks
- dress shoes that look clean and intentional
- one more casual outfit for variety
For many of my guys, the best combination is one polished dressy outfit and one more relaxed outfit. That gives the gallery a lot of variety without making the session feel overcomplicated.

A Few Shopping Tips That Make Life Easier
o somewhere that knows menswear
This is one reason I keep going back to a store like Jos. A. Bank.
When someone knows how menswear should fit, the whole process gets easier. You’re not standing there guessing whether a jacket is supposed to fit that way or whether the pants are too long or too loose. You have someone helping guide the process.
Don’t guess on sizing
Please do not just grab what looks about right and hope for the best.
Measurements matter. Fit matters. Senior pictures are not the place for baggy sleeves, bunching fabric, or pants that puddle awkwardly at the shoe.
Think beyond the session
A good suit or blazer usually isn’t just for photos.
If you choose well, he may wear it again for graduation, a banquet, an internship interview, college events, weddings, or other important milestones.
That makes the purchase feel a lot more worthwhile.
Keep an open mind
Sometimes the outfit you think will be the one is not the one.
That definitely happened to us.
What looked best on the hanger was not always what looked best on Trevor, and some of the pieces we never would have chosen first ended up being the strongest options once he put them on.
My Favorite Types of Looks for Guys Senior Pictures
If you want my honest opinion, these are always strong choices:
The classic suit
Always timeless. Always polished. Always photographs beautifully.
The blazer and slacks combo
A little less formal than a full suit, but still elevated and stylish.
The vest look
This can be such a great option, and my personal favorite! I knew Trevor wouldn’t wear the vest often, but it’s perfect for college grads or for guys who want something a little more refined and layered.
The casual second outfit
Dark jeans, a great shirt, maybe a jacket layered over it. Something relaxed but still intentional. This combination of polished plus casual usually gives the best overall variety in a senior gallery.
Final Thoughts
Shopping for guys’ senior picture outfits does not have to be stressful.
Sometimes it starts with just wanting him to have something nice to wear, and then somewhere along the way, it turns into one of those moments you remember forever. I still remember buying Trevor’s first real suit for high school senior pictures, and I love that years later, we were back doing it again for college graduation photos with an even more polished look.
That’s why I always tell moms not to underestimate this part of the process.
The right outfit does more than look good in pictures. It helps a guy feel confident, comfortable, and pulled together. And when that happens, it shows in every image.
If you’re trying to figure out where to shop for guys’ senior picture outfits, Jos. A. Bank has absolutely been my go-to. It’s where we found Trevor’s high school suit, where we found his college suit with the vest, and it’s still one of the first places I’d recommend when a mom asks me where to start.
