Do You Have to Use the School Photographer for Senior Pictures?
Let’s be honest—there’s a lot of confusion around senior pictures, especially when it comes to those infamous yearbook photos.
And the question I’ve heard more times than I can count?
“Do I have to use the school photographer for senior pictures?”
Here’s the short version:
✅ Yes—if you want your photo in the yearbook, most Phoenix-area schools do require you to use their contracted photographer.
❌ No—you are not required to use them for all your senior portraits.
But let’s dig into what that really means.
The Reality of School Contracted Photographers
Once upon a time, these studios offered more than just the classic blue background. You went to their studio, picked a few poses, maybe even got an outdoor shot. But lately? It’s more like “smile, click, done.”
Some local schools (looking at you, Gilbert District) now take “senior pictures” in the school auditorium. Same background as the underclassmen. No retouching. Zero personality. Just another number in the system. I haven’t had kids in the public school system for a few years, so hopefully they at least let you go to a studio that has a few options now.
My Son’s Yearbook Photo Experience? Yikes.
Back in 2019, my son Trevor had three tries to get a decent yearbook photo—and I’m using “decent” loosely here. The first was during school picture day (a total disaster), the second was a chaotic mess with no communication, and the third? Well, I’ll let the photo speak for itself. They finally had him drive to the studio… and still managed to botch the lighting and let the edge of the background show. 😬
Let’s be real: the fake smile was all him. But even that can be fixed with a photographer who knows how to connect with teens.
He gave me full permission to share the photo (because yep, he hates it). We both hope it helps other seniors realize you have better options.

Can I Choose My Own Photographer for Senior Pictures?
So glad you asked—because YES, you absolutely can choose your own photographer!
Most of the time, the school’s photographer will try to upsell you on packages. But here’s what they won’t mention:
👉 You are not required to buy anything.
👉 Their only job is to take the image for the yearbook—nothing more.
I’ve had so many parents tell me the same thing:
“I didn’t even like the pictures, but I felt like I had to pay for them.”
Spoiler alert: You don’t!

What Makes a Real Senior Portrait?
Let’s compare:
- Same kid.
- Same timeframe.
- Two wildly different results.
Trevor loves cars, so we borrowed a 1965 Shelby Cobra and made his session something special. We did several looks, multiple outfits, and even got him to smile (on purpose this time). 😄
This is what I want every teen to have—a session that’s about them. Their style. Their interests. Their personality.

The Yearbook Photo Doesn’t Have to Be Terrible
It doesn’t need to be a full senior session. A simple headshot with great lighting, natural expressions, and just the right amount of retouching can still make a big impact.
While I don’t offer sessions that are just for the yearbook, my Select Sessions might be exactly what you’re looking for—a shorter, more affordable way to get high-quality images without the rushed studio setup or one-size-fits-all posing.
✅ We’ll take about 20 minutes for the session
✅ You’ll come to my office and choose your favorite
✅ I retouch it professionally and send it to you, typically within 48 hours
✅ All for $625 + tax, including 5 fully retouched digital images (Total Cost: $676.68)
But these sessions are very limited and only available in August and September.

What a great educational post for senior’s and their parents! It always drives me crazy when the school contracted photographers “trick” parents and students into thinking they can only use them for their senior photos. Those yearbook pictures your took for your senior girls don’t even compare to the standard school issued photos! Beautiful images!
It’s so frustrating. I’ve now seen it first-hand since my kids are Class of 2019 and Class of 2021. They trick people into ordering pictures, announcements, and other items that aren’t required.
LOVE THIS! Thank you for sharing the truth about yearbook photos. We have the same issue here. The school pushes this “contracted photographer” and parents get letters that make them think that they HAVE to use them and pay their crazy prices for a cookie cutter experience! I had it this year with my own senior and we loved the image I took of her so much more. We have to wear that stupid drape here!
Oh yuck, we don’t have the drape thing here. But honestly, have you ever heard someone rave about their kids’ school pictures? Of course not! Senior portraits should be a milestone for senior year, an event all by itself, and I really hope all my seniors remember how fun their senior portrait experience was!
This is awesome! I’m so glad you said this because we all want to!! Thankfully where I am, the Seniors can choose and outside photographer that has a few guidelines to follow. But just knowing the difference makes ALL the difference…
You are so lucky!!! I’ve done senior pictures in Colorado too, and it is so nice that the seniors can submit one of their professional senior portraits for the yearbook!
This 100%! The contracted photographer doesntt get to know the Senior, or focus on what makes them UNIQUE! what you showcased here does exactly that! You have found a way to capture the senior in revolutionary ways that showcase who they are! I love this!!
Hey Kelly! Thanks so much for commenting! I really hate how they do yearbook pictures in Arizona, but I guess with such large high schools it probably is easier. I just want parents to be aware, you know? I have so many clients that find out after the fact that they didn’t have to buy a package from the photographer or announcements from Jostens. There are lots of other options!
You are so right! There is so much more to Senior photography than the cookie cutter photos the Seniors have to get through their High School. What a great article you wrote to explain this so nicely. Love the absolute great images you captured on this handsome Senior.
Hi Kim, thanks so much for commenting! I really hope parents of seniors have a chance to read this so they won’t make the same mistakes as my previous clients. And I agree…he is pretty handsome. I was so frustrated seeing the horrible school pictures. The original photo came back with a huge sweat stain down the front of his shirt. Of course there wasn’t and option to retouch it!
