She’s Not a Kid Anymore—But She’s Not an Adult Yet Either
Listen, I get it. Teens are basically adults in progress. As they go through their tween and teen years, they are just trying to make sense of how they look and feel in a body that’s constantly changing. A positive body image doesn’t appear overnight.
It takes time and a lot of patience, sometimes tears. But that’s the beauty of it!
You’re the calm in their chaos—the steady voice reminding them they’re enough. Let them know they are absolutely stunning just the way they are with a fun teen photoshoot. Frame their laughter and beaming smiles in high definition. Start now, and those confident smiles you frame today will carry into tomorrow.
From Shy to Naturally Confident: What I See Behind the Lens
As a professional teen photographer and proud mom who has been in your shoes, I’ve seen it all. Helping my daughter figure out life one obstacle at a time was challenging but also fulfilling. One minute, I could do no wrong and her best friend – the next, every comment turned into a debate.
This might sting a bit if you are a tween parent. Right around the time they turn 11 or 12, something shifts. Suddenly, you ‘don’t understand them.’ If I said her hair looked pretty, she insists on the opposite. Her dazzling smile? Her ‘crooked’ teeth made it ugly.
I thought I was raising a confident daughter. I thought I was raising a confident daughter. But all that self-assurance? It vanished almost overnight. Replaced with self-doubt, criticism, and comparison and it tore me apart. I saw all of this from behind a lens and at home. Whether it was a holiday, birthday or just a special day, I snap fleeting moments when she felt on top of the world. And I know I’m not the only one. If you’re reading this, maybe you’ve seen your teen’s sparkle dim a little too.
I peek at those treasured images whenever I see my now adult daughter radiating confidence inside and out. They’re still figuring it all out—and you’re right there in the front row, cheering them on. I help parents turn those precious moments into lasting memories.
What If They Could See Themselves Like You Do?
Teenagers don’t see their potential as clearly as their parents do. As a professional photographer who’s worked with dozens of teens, my goal is to help them build confidence with a positive, super fun, no-judgment photoshoot.
My approach is simple but powerful: I encourage teens to be themselves, help them feel confident in front of the camera, and show them just how amazing they already are. It’s the best way to get those super candid, Instagram-worthy shots. Helping them show their true selves is an experience that never gets old. You get to spend quality time with your teen AND get the stunning portraits you want.
The first step is to make your teen look and feel as beautiful as you know she is. Cue a professional makeover, but nothing over the top. Let’s just spoil her a little with an age-appropriate makeover that brings out her natural glow and helps her feel seen—without hiding who she is.
They grow up fast—like, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it fast. These two photos were taken just a few years apart. Same girl, same sparkle in her eyes… but wow, look at that confidence! On the left she’s 13 years old, still in junior high. On the right, she’s 16 and a junior in high school!

The shoot is all about her. She doesn’t see herself the way you do—not yet. A custom photoshoot that makes her the main character is perfect for this. A beautiful step in raising confident daughters.
How a Teen Photoshoot Brought Me Closer to My Daughter
I speak from experience.
At 14, my daughter had braces, thought she was too short, and couldn’t see her natural beauty—no matter how much I told her she was stunning. That’s when I realized the problem wasn’t that she didn’t believe me… she just couldn’t see it for herself.
So, I decided to show her. First, I did what I always do before a teen session—kept it light, fun, and true to her. Just a little glow-up to match the confident girl I knew she could see. A simple braid, loose curls – nothing over the top. Then came the outfit—something I promised she only had to wear for the pictures—and just like that, she was ready.
The final reveal? Total tearjerker! She couldn’t believe it was her—she was convinced it had to be my editing that made her look that good. Look—I’m good, but I can’t make someone beautiful. That’s God’s job! WWatching my little girl finally see that she was beautiful? That moment will stay with me forever.
Kids grow up fast, mama. I had no idea just how much she would change in a few short years—until I saw it with my own eyes in those photos. That simple makeover didn’t create her beauty… it just uncovered what was already there, waiting to shine through.

I realized she was no longer my little girl. Seemingly overnight, she had turned into this radiant teen that I was proud to call my daughter. The dazzling eyes and huge smile as she realized she was stunning—those picture-perfect moments are Signature Silk Portraits hanging proudly in my office. And she’s just one of many teens I’ve seen light up during their session.

Why These Years Deserve to Be Remembered
Teens change FAST. One day they’re goofing off in a t-shirt with a mouth full of braces, and the next they’re walking across the stage in a cap and gown. The collage above? That’s my daughter—from age 14 to 21. Yep, even the braces stage made the cut (because it’s part of her story too).

That’s why I love teen photo sessions. They freeze those in-between moments—the ones that don’t always feel picture-perfect but absolutely deserve to be remembered.
Your Teen’s Story – Celebrated by Magical Memories by Michelle
She may cringe at that sweet, brace-filled smile, but I cherish it. It’s not too late. Your teen’s self-confidence is just a perfect picture away. Freeze time and boost their self-worth with professional teen photoshoots. They will grow and change faster than you can blink throughout these years. Celebrate who they are before those moments slip away.

It’s crazy that they can’t see their beauty! Your daughter is so pretty and I love that she’s a reader!
Oh totally, used to take her to the library for a couple of books and we’d leave with a stack of 15!
I absolutely love this. I have an 18 year old daughter and we have had some self esteem issues over the years. A photo session is a perfect way for our girls to see themselves the way we do.
Pretty sure all teen girls go through this, just wish we could make it easier on them!
Love this post so much! It is so important to capture every stage of your kids life. Thank you for sharing! ❤️
Yes, I wish people would think about all the amazing things that happen between kindergarten and senior year! <3
What a wonderful experience and beautiful girl you have there!
Thank you Jodi!
Such a great read, something that a lot of people don’t understand until they experience it! Love these images, I hope your daughter will trust you more when you tell her how beautiful she is!
Thanks Carrie!
I love this! I don’t have children yet but I really love this idea and your story.
As someone who has been on many photo shoots with you, I absolutely love that each one has been a unique and individual experience! You are able to capture the personality of everyone you bring along on your photo adventure! It’s always fun, but seeing how special each person feels, during the session and once they view their beautiful results, is heartwarming! I think the boys are the most surprising! Initially humoring their mom’s, they end up having so much fun and can’t wait to see their photos!
Best Photographer and Memories are truly Magical!
Thank you! Almost every boy I’ve ever worked with has been like that! Matthew surprised me when he actually wanted to do pictures again! I have a couple senior boys scheduled already and cannot wait to take them out for their senior pictures!
My 14year old niece needs a pick-up and I want to steer her towards having more pride in her appearance (reveals too much cleavage in her selfies)
She also has been through separation twice now , and I want to make her feel special
Hi Saige! Please feel free to contact me if you’re interested in setting up a photo shoot for your niece. I’d love to meet you both!
