What to Wear for Fall Senior Photos: 8 Cool Looks for Warm Weather
Yes, I know… it’s 110 outside and we’re all dreaming for those fall temps. But we all know that even when October hits, Phoenix is still out here pretending it’s summer. That doesn’t mean we can’t bring the fall fashion vibes! Think warm colors, cozy textures, and of course—pumpkin-flavored everything. This season is all about showing off your style in a way that fits your vibe, whether that’s rustic, glam, edgy, or a little mix of everything.
October and November are always the most requested months—and this year’s no different. There are only TWO spots left for fall senior sessions, so if you want those dreamy golden hour shots and cozy outfit vibes, now’s the time to book!
Here are some go-to trends (and a few new favorites!) to help plan your fall senior photo outfits:
Stylish Fall Outfits for Your Senior Photos (Even If It’s Still 90°)
1. Fall Colors That Pop in Photos
Fall fashion isn’t just about boots and flannel—it’s about those rich, warm tones that look unreal in golden hour light. Mustard, rust, burnt orange, chocolate brown, and deep burgundy will instantly bring fall vibes to your senior pictures. Whether you’re keeping it casual with a cozy sweater or going bold with wide-leg cords, these earthy tones work beautifully in both outdoor and urban locations.

2. Bold Patterns & Fall Prints
Fall fashion is the perfect excuse to skip the basics and go for something with a little more wow. Stripes, plaid, abstract prints, and even micro florals are all in for senior season. Whether you’re rocking bold patterned pants, layering a plaid vest over a turtleneck, or wearing warm-toned florals with a fall twist, these outfits add instant personality to your photos.
Bonus: textures like corduroy, ribbed knits, and soft flannels help your outfit photograph even better—giving you that cozy-but-stylish look without going full pumpkin spice cliché.

3. Light Layers That Add Style (Not Sweat)
Arizona fall doesn’t always call for chunky knits—but light layers? That’s where the magic happens. Think oversized flannels, denim jackets, and open cardigans—pieces you can toss on (or tie around your waist) to add texture without the bulk. These layers are perfect for giving your outfit depth, especially when you want that cozy look without pretending it’s actually cold outside.
Whether you’re dressing up for a nighttime city shoot or keeping it chill for golden hour in the desert, a lightweight layer brings your whole look together.

4. Fall Looks with Leather Layers
Nothing levels up a fall outfit faster than a leather jacket. Whether you’re rocking a fitted moto jacket or slinging it over your shoulders for a chic, model-off-duty look, leather brings instant cool. Go bold with black or add warmth with rust, burgundy, or tan. These pieces pair with everything—from jeans and boots to flowy dresses—and photograph beautifully in both daytime and after dark sessions. Don’t have your own? The Style Closet has options in multiple colors and sizes so you can test out the look for your shoot.

5. Sweaters & Fall Layers That Always Work
There’s a reason sweaters are a fall favorite. From cozy cables to cropped knits and oversized pullovers, they bring warmth and texture to your photos without feeling bulky. Whether you’re keeping it casual with jeans or dressing it up with a sweater dress, this look is effortless, stylish, and totally season-ready. And yes, sweaters work beautifully for nighttime photos too—just scroll through these cozy looks and you’ll see what I mean.

6. Flannel Forever
You can’t go wrong with a classic plaid flannel. It’s cozy, casual, and looks great layered over a tank or tee. Marissa wore hers open with rolled sleeves and gave off major cool-girl fall energy. Pair it with jeans and ankle boots, or even a denim skirt if you’re feeling bold. This outfit is proof you can be comfortable and stylish.

7. Boots That Bring the Fall Vibe
Chunky boots, lace-up styles, and everything in between—if there’s one must-have for fall senior photos, it’s a good pair of boots. They instantly give your outfit structure and style, whether you’re wearing a dress, a skirt, or jeans. From edgy combat boots to western-inspired pairs, boots add personality and polish without trying too hard. And yes, they’re perfect for both daytime golden hour and nighttime city lights. So if you’ve got a favorite pair, bring them!
Bonus: They’re also practical for uneven ground or cooler evenings without sacrificing your style.

8. Athleisure, But Make It Fall
This one’s for my Lulu-lovin’ seniors who want to feel comfy and cute for their shoot. Athleisure isn’t just for running errands or lounging—it can totally work for your senior pictures too. A cropped hoodie or oversized zip-up with biker shorts or a sporty skirt gives off cool, relaxed vibes without feeling overdone. Add your go-to sneakers (yes, Jordans count) and keep the hair simple—think slick ponytail or messy bun.
If you want to add a little something extra, try layering with a fleece pullover or lightweight puffer vest. Even a baseball cap can pull the whole look together! It’s the kind of outfit that looks like you, feels comfortable, and still photographs like a dream—especially for fall sessions when it’s still pushing 90.

Bonus Styling Tips
Want to take it up a notch? Add textures like suede, waffle knit, sherpa, or denim. Layer with scarves or cardigans for depth, and don’t be afraid to bring accessories—sun hats, ankle socks, layered necklaces, or even a warm-toned lip color can take your look from everyday cute to camera ready. Just skip the neons and busy logos—they never play nice with Arizona’s golden light.

Fall photos in Phoenix might not come with crunchy leaves and chilly weather, but they can bring all the cozy style and bold color you love. Whether you’re layering cardigans, slipping into boots, or rocking plaid like a pro, your fall senior pictures will still bring the vibe—even if you’re sipping iced chai in 95 degrees.

Oh how I wish that fall meant cooler temperatures for us in Phoenix! We have triple digit temps in the forecast again this week! But we’re patient, eventually we’ll be able to enjoy sweater weather, probably in January! LOL! Thanks for commenting Brandi, I always love hearing from you!

While I’m not a huge fan of the changing seasons, I am a great fan of the fashion! Love the comprehensive looks you’ve outlined here. It makes it so much easier for seniors to style their own sessions.
In Phoenix we don’t really get different seasons, just warm, hot, and blazing fire! LOL! So for my kids that want a “fall” look, we just have to find the right clothes. Our leaves change in January…you know, when everyone else has snow. It’s a challenge for sure!
Fall is my favorite season to photograph seniors in! The fashion choices are always to fun and I love the changing of the seasons!
Hi Brandi! Haha, we have to fake fall in AZ, since it usually still 95-100 in October! Our “fall” is more late December-January, but having the right outfits make it feel a little more like fall.
Love these Fall senior picture outfits. Fall is such a popular time for pictures and having an idea of what to wear is such a great help!
Thanks so much Jodi! Now if only we could get fall weather in October, that would be amazing!
