An Artsy Urban Senior Photo Session in Downtown Phoenix
One of my favorite parts of the senior portrait experience is helping each senior bring their personality, creativity, and big ideas into the session. Tally made that easy. She’s an artist, a runner, a creator, and someone who radiates personality in every frame. Once I got to know the real Tally? Game over. She needed a bold, colorful setting that could keep up with her energy, and Downtown Phoenix absolutely delivered!

The best senior sessions happen when we collaborate, and Tally was completely on board. She brought her own creative ideas, trusted me to make suggestions, and rolled with every location, pose, and tiny adjustment along the way. The camera absolutely loved her, and how could it not? Nothing photographs better than real personality, and Tally had plenty to spare!

Artist, Dreamer, Senior: Tally’s Downtown Phoenix Photoshoot
Tally, a high school grad from Gilbert Classical Academy, is the kind of senior who lives in color. She had a clear vision for her session, and that vision was artsy, bold, and completely her. Inspired by another one of my seniors, Mercy, she wanted her own portraits to spark ideas for other creative teens too.
Tally told me that “creativity is intelligence having fun,” and I couldn’t agree more. Honestly, she might be the perfect example of it.

Tally is a triplet, and she wanted to include that special bond in a creative way. She chose primary paint colors to represent herself and her two brothers: yellow for Tally, red and blue for her brothers. It was personal, thoughtful, and so very her.
She even brought paint, an easel, and lens-free glasses so I could swipe a brush across her face without smudging anything important. Yes, we planned a pre-shoot paint moment, because Tally was not messing around with her creativity.

Showing Her True Colors
Everywhere we turned in Downtown Phoenix, there was another backdrop that felt made for Tally. Bright murals, colorful city textures, and even a “be kind” wall gave us so many ways to bring her artsy senior pictures to life.

And can we talk about the easel her parents brought? Parents who support their teen’s creative vision are my favorite. It became the perfect prop to celebrate Tally’s love for painting and gave us even more variety, personality, and color throughout her session.

Capturing Movement, Energy, and Confidence
Tally isn’t only a talented artist. She’s also a cross-country runner, so of course we made time for movement shots and photos with her medals.
Those images added a completely different kind of energy to her senior session. She was in her element, and you can see the joy and confidence in every frame. These photos aren’t just cute extras. They’re reminders of the hard work, commitment, and passions that helped shape her senior year.

This Is Why I Love My Job
The best part of Tally’s senior session was watching her story come to life through her pictures. From brainstorming creative ideas to chasing light through Downtown Phoenix, every part of her session felt like a celebration of who she is.
If you’re a creative senior, or the parent of one, Tally’s session is such a fun reminder that senior pictures don’t have to feel stiff or standard. They can be colorful, meaningful, personal, and full of personality.

Where Is She Now?
Tally recently graduated from Northern Arizona University as a film major. Yes, she even has an IMDb page! She’s already worked on films in Los Angeles, and one of her short films has been shown in more than 25 international festivals.
This girl didn’t just chase her dreams. She ran straight toward them in true cross-country style.

Frequently Asked Questions About Creative Senior Pictures
Can senior pictures include creative props?
Yes, please! Props work best when they help tell the story of who your senior is. For Tally, that meant paint, an easel, her medals, and the colors she chose for herself and her brothers. Random props can feel cheesy fast, but meaningful details? Those are magic!
Is Downtown Phoenix good for colorful senior pictures?
Oh yes, definitely! Downtown Phoenix is full of color, murals, texture, and little unexpected corners that can make senior pictures feel bold and creative. It’s a great fit for seniors who want something more artsy, urban, or high-energy than a desert location.
How do we make senior pictures feel unique?
We plan them around your senior. Outfits, locations, colors, hobbies, props, and the overall vibe all matter. The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s session. It’s to create senior pictures that feel like your teen — the real one you know and love.
