No Clue What to Pack? Start with These 12 Dorm Favorites!
College move-in day is coming fast, and let’s be real: figuring out what to buy for your dorm room can spiral into full panic mode. When our daughter moved out of state for her freshman year, my husband and I were clueless. (We both lived at home during college—zero dorm experience.)
So we did what any overwhelmed parents would do: turned to Amazon.
After a full year in the dorms and a few more in an apartment, we’ve learned what’s worth buying and what you can skip. This list is based on real experience—no fluff, no Pinterest-perfect aesthetic, just stuff that made dorm life easier. Bonus: it’s all on Amazon, so yes, easy shopping FTW!
So if you’re prepping to send your kid off to college—or maybe you are the one packing up—these are the 12 Amazon dorm essentials we actually used, loved, and would buy again.
Let’s get to it!
What to Buy and What to Skip For Your College Dorm Room
I’m starting here because this is one of the BEST purchases we’ve ever made. It’s super easy to use if the battery dies, and it’s completely idiot-proof. If you don’t hook it up correctly, it lights up and buzzes before you blow something up (which, let’s be honest, is helpful). We have one in every car now. Make sure your teen drivers have one—and if they’re bringing a car to college, this tops the list!
2. Zippered Mattress Protector
Let’s talk bedding. After hearing horror stories about bed bugs, this was a must. We wiped down the mattress and zipped on a fully enclosed protector right away. It’s bed bug and dust mite proof, so it gave me some peace of mind. Check with the dorm, but odds are you’ll need Twin XL.
3. Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper
It’s a dorm. We weren’t expecting hotel luxury. This 3″ breathable topper made a huge difference, though—it’s cooler than typical memory foam and way more comfy. It was a must-have for Alex and got passed on to a new freshman when she moved to an apartment.
This fuzzy reading pillow is perfect for sitting up in bed. It props you up against the wall and has a removable faux fur cover. We got the pink one (because of course we did), but it comes in other colors too.
5. Padded Desk Stool / Wobble Chair
This is by far her favorite desk chair ever! The height is adjustable and the seat is padded…and it rocks! This is a great desk chair even if you’re not in a dorm room, but let me tell you, the desk chairs at UNM are hard wood and incredibly uncomfortable. If you’re searching for the best wobble chair, you found it and it is worth every penny! And yes, it was moved to her apartment and is another must-have!
6. Collapsible Clothes Hamper Storage
If your teen knows how to do laundry, gold star. Now they’ll need somewhere to toss dirty clothes. This hamper collapses, has handles, and comes in cute prints. She’s got three of them now and still uses them even after college graduation!
After years of hauling around hard plastic laundry baskets, this one was a game-changer. It’s soft-sided, folds down to under 2″, and fits even bulky loads like bedding. We’ve had it for 3+ years—and last I checked, two were only a few bucks more than one. Bonus: They also double as shopping bags when your student finally remembers to buy laundry detergent or runs to Target.
Lifesavers for move-out day. These helped us store clothes, bedding, and more without turning everything into a packing nightmare. It comes with a pump, but if you have access to a vacuum, that’s even better. FYI: most dorm kids don’t have vacuums—we went with a Swiffer XL Wet & Dry.
I thought these were just cute extras. Nope. Turns out they’re perfect for the “worn-but-clean-enough” pile—especially for things like pajama pants, Nike Pros, or that favorite oversized tee. Instead of the floor? Into the basket they go. We used Command Hooks to hang them, and I seriously considered adding these to every room at home.

Most of her stuff stayed in dorm storage over the summer, but this desk organizer came home with her. It has 5 compartments and kept everything in its place—until finals hit, of course.
These mini wall shelves made her dorm feel a little more homey. We used the 8″ ones for holding small décor and essentials.

Pro Tip: If your student likes whiteboards, buy them and add magnets for easy storage. grab a couple and add magnets. Hang them up to save space, then pull them down to study. We got the big one from Amazon and smaller ones from Walmart—she’s used them since high school and all through nursing school

Dorm closets = tiny. This organizer has drawers, shelves, and side pockets—perfect for shoes, snacks, or yes… grocery bags. (She made fun of me for packing grocery bags. Guess who asked for more two months later? Winning!)
Pro Tip: Velvet Grommet Curtains and Fairy Lights
Her dorm had mini-blinds that didn’t block out anything. We searched forever to find curtains she actually liked—with grommets—so we could hang them with (say it with me)… Command Hooks!
Fairy Lights: Cliché? Maybe. But they gave her room a cozy glow and doubled as photo display with little clips. They made the jump from dorm to apartment, so clearly, they’re not just a freshman phase.

Your First Apartment
So that’s our Amazon dorm haul—minus the unnecessary extras and “what were we thinking?” items. After years of hauling bins in and out of dorms and apartments, these are the products that actually stuck around (and yes, a few are still going strong as she wraps up college!).
If you’ve got a favorite dorm find or something you swear by, drop it in the comments—I love hearing what works for other families! And hey, if you’re sending off a senior soon, don’t forget to share this list with them (and bookmark it for move-in day).
