Senior Pictures at Night

You have many choices for your senior pictures, so Magical Memories by Michelle offers something that not many other photographers do, and that is having your senior portraits taken at night! We start about an hour or so before sunset and once the sun goes down we keep shooting in the city lights!

Downtown Chandler

One of my favorite locations for senior photo shoots after dark is Downtown Chandler. By shooting during the week we avoid the crowds and parking, and you get something fabulous added to your gallery of senior pictures! These beautiful images of Briana were taken near the parking lot of the Chandler Public Library. I love the way the city lights glow in the background!

We moved just across the street to get some more images with that beautiful nighttime bokeh, which is a photography term for the blurry, out of focus backgrounds we all love! Briana’s boyfriend joined us for these last few images and his jokes and comments brought out some fun expressions from Briana.

Of course the color images are always fabulous, but all of our sessions include some black and white portraits as well. This is one of my favorite black & white images of Briana!

As I mentioned earlier, this was only part of Briana’s photo shoot! Be sure to check out more of her senior pictures where we incorporated her Jeep and took some beautiful gymnastics pictures! If you’re looking for something to make your senior pictures a little different, give us a call so we can start planning with you!

Downtown Chandler Senior Pictures

Senior pictures in Downtown Chandler and the surrounding areas are so much fun! There is such variety. We can find everything from rustic to green to urban! Plus it is a great place to shoot senior pictures at night!

Graffiti Walls

Graffiti walls are very popular for senior pictures, so we found this fun wall with lots of options. Keep in mind, this is just off the side of the road. As with many of my favorite places, there isn’t really an address or specific parking, which is why I prefer to load everything in my van and go together.

Including Your Car for Senior Pictures

Below you can see another image that includes more of the wall, as well as our next stop, which included Briana’s Jeep. I love the simple clothing she chose! If you’re unsure about what to wear for senior pictures, simple is best. I love the cute tank top and white shorts. It’s a great contrast with the black Jeep! And as always, bring your sunglasses!

Over the years, many of my favorite locations have been demolished. Such is the case near Downtown Chandler. Instead, we found a dead end road and with a little Photoshop help to remove fences, you’d never know! Photoshop also came in handy for the Jeep pictures since there was a small dent.

So Beautiful!

Bri is a very talented gymnast and I was able to convince her to do some jumps for me. The result is this gorgeous silhouette taken at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler. This is the perfect example of being able to image the outcome before you click the shutter. Check out our Facebook page or Instagram to see the before and after of this shot!

I also recommend that gymnasts bring chalk and grips, as well as medals. Bri was the all-around champion at Westerns last year, so she chose to bring those medals.

Checklist for Gymnasts

I’ve photographed many gymnasts over the years and here is the list that I use. Place chalk in a Ziploc bag, then put that bag zipped into another bag. Let’s just say I’ve learned from experience. Cleaning up spilled chalk isn’t easy!

  • Competition Leotard
  • Warm Ups
  • Grips
  • Chalk
  • Medals
  • Wipes (to clean up after our chalk fun!)

Chandler Senior Pictures for Guys

Does your guy love the idea of senior pictures? Or is he a little hesitant? Or is he doing it just for mom? I’ve worked with senior guys that are all of these things! In fact, I often have more senior guys on my schedule than I do girls, and I love it! Both senior guys and senior girls are fun in their own way, but once my senior guys figure out that I’m truly invested in their thoughts and ideas, they have a blast at their senior portrait session!

4 Tips to Help Guys Love Senior Pictures

1. Communication Before Senior Pictures

It is not uncommon for me to communicate directly with my teens to hear what they have to say, and trust me, what they say (or don’t say) tells me a lot even before our photo shoot. If a guy has short answers, he’s maybe just doing it for mom. He’ll cooperate fully and maybe give me an idea or two. Then some guys tell me they just don’t have any ideas. So I throw a few thoughts their way, maybe text some pictures of other senior guys’ portrait sessions, and make sure they’ve taken a few minutes to fill out our Senior Portrait Questionnaire. Do they like sports? Music? Cars? As much as I want to hear “YES” I also need to hear “NO!” I want him to tell me what loves, what looks fun, and yes, even what he hates! Together we will make this a great experience and get those awesome portraits for Mom and Grandma!

Matthew definitely had some ideas of his own! He brought along many of his favorite shirts and even had one specific idea that I’ll share later.

2. Include His Favorite Sport or Hobby

Matthew is a varsity soccer player at Hamilton High School in Chandler. He also plays club soccer, so I asked him if he wanted to include this in his portrait session. I asked rather than assume.  If he had said no, I might have had to persuade him a little more, but thankfully he was more than willing to bring his soccer gear along. Before his photo shoot I had sent him a few ideas so he’d be prepared ahead of time and know that he’d be running showing me his moves! Of course I wanted one or two “nice” shots in his uniform but I was much more interested in capturing his action shots!

3. Bring His Dog

I can’t say this enough! If you have a furry friend that has been in your family for years, it is sad to think they might not be with you when you graduate from college. Do you have any portraits of you and your dog? Well, Cooper is Matthew’s dog. He got him when he was 7 years old.

We found a great field in Chandler at Tumbleweed Park that was actually perfect for Cooper to run and play. All dogs are different, so we do what is best and safest for each one. Some dogs are great listeners. Let’s just say that Cooper wasn’t one of them. Often I want to take off the dog’s collar, but Matthew’s mom, Holly, said Cooper was a runner.  So the collar stays on! But just letting him run a little and having his favorite toy, it was easy to get these priceless pictures! Yes, I always try to get some of the dog alone. Trust me, the day will come when you’ll be glad you have it.

At one point Cooper accidentally slipped out of his collar and Matthew and his mom Holly had to chase him down! While originally this was an outtake, it ended up being a keeper! And then once we got Cooper surrounded, I was able to catch this adorable playful image of him before we got his collar on him again.

4. Listen!

This is oh so important! LISTEN to him!!! I’m not sure I’ve ever had a guy with as many of his own ideas! Matthew included lots of his favorite t-shirts as well as a couple of nice shirts and ties. One of the things he mentioned was a specific headshot that a friend of his had done in France. As he tried explaining it to me, he told me that it was cropped in close, monochromatic, and it looked like he was in deep thought. He couldn’t find the picture though, so he sent me this:

Thoughtful Chimp | Funny Story About Senior Pictures

Um, it’s a monkey, which is why I have nicknamed Matthew “Monkey Boy.” I laughed so hard after his text! It caught me by complete surprise and it’s just one of those things I’ll never forget! At the end of his session we were in Downtown Chandler. Normally I don’t show the back of my camera too much, but in this case we were going for something so specific, it really was best to show him what the images looked like. After just a few shots he was able to nail the look he wanted and here is the final result!

As an artist, this is what it’s all about. Picture something in your head and make it a reality! And it’s even better when the idea comes from the teenager himself! Thankfully he looks more like Matthew and less like a monkey!

Top Senior Photographer

Choosing a professional photographer for your senior pictures is a tough job! There are so many photographers out there with a wide range of experience and services, and it can be overwhelming. One thing that sets me apart is the fact that I specialize in teens and seniors. I love this age, I feel like it gives me the opportunity to really help their confidence and self image. Teens are always so hard on themselves, so one goal for my senior photo shoots is to make sure that my seniors feel extra special. They get my undivided attention for several hours, with no rush. Because I’m not watching the clock, we can change outfits, switch back, move locations, and try different looks all without the stress of trying to fit everything into a 1-2 hour photo shoot.

What Happens During Your Senior Photo Shoot

Adrienne, like many teen girls, was excited about having her senior pictures taken but of course was still nervous about being in front of the camera. Her mom, Laurel, loved the fact that we wouldn’t be rushed, but she too was a little nervous. It’s totally normal and perfectly ok! Because I deal with teenagers all the time, and have 2 of my own, I’m used to their quirks, eye rolls, and opinions. At Adrienne’s in-person consultation, we met and discussed what she was looking for and even shared some photos with me. That always worries me a little, because I have a certain style, other photographers have their style, and we’re all different! But this time…magic! Adrienne had just the right outfits, shoes, and accessories to be sure her senior pictures would be flawless. She started out with this cute dress with just the right amount of color, and since we had a gorgeous sky that day, the tall grass made a gorgeous backdrop! Her makeup was flawless and her long curls gave her a great look for her senior pictures! The sunglasses paired with a more serious expression, helped add variety to her final gallery.

Senior Pictures at the Lake

While it looks sunny and gorgeous, like a typical Arizona day, it was actually very chilly! The day of Adrienne’s photo shoot it was in the low 60s and for us AZ peeps who are used to warm weather it was COLD!!! And yet she splashed, twirled, and waded in the lake as if it was a beautiful spring day! Then to add to the look, I got some more artistic shots playing with the sun flare which turned out to be some of Adrienne’s favorites.

Creating Artistic Senior Pictures

As a professional photographer in Chandler, I see beyond just what the eye sees. I have a vision even before shooting the image, I know what can be retouched, and what will really make an image special. This one, which is another favorite, was made into a beautiful metal portrait with a quote. Yes, everything is custom designed so we were able to use a quote that Adrienne’s dad uses for her. It has special meaning to their family, so it goes from being just a picture to being something they will cherish forever.

Downtown Chandler Senior Pictures

With all the outfits Adrienne had, we were able to create a gorgeous gallery with lots of expressions that really show her personality. She loves to write music and brought her guitar along, so she looks stunning sitting on the waterfall in the sun. As an added surprise, I put the lyrics to her favorite song in her Premier Slideshow. We used a hat from our Style Closet, tried out many different locations, and when the sun went down, we kept going! Check out the variety here!!! And this isn’t her whole gallery! I see many photographers who give final galleries with images that are very similar. My job is to take only the best of the best, artistically edit and professionally retouch each photo by hand, then spend time at the Reveal and Design Session to help you select your favorites and design your artwork! It is a complete boutique experience that caters to seniors and their families.
