What Natural Senior Picture Retouching Looks Like
What professional retouching actually looks like: spoiler alert, you still look like you!
Shocked? You shouldn’t be.

Senior pictures aren’t about changing the way you look. Retouching is one of the ways I make your photos look like you on your best day.
It’s why I tell you not to stress about the last-minute blemish that showed up the morning of your session, a few small wrinkles in your clothes, or even a couple of bruises. Life happens. Editing helps!
There are plenty of little ways to prepare for senior pictures without stressing over every tiny detail.
One of the biggest questions I get from seniors and parents is, “Do you Photoshop the photos?”
Yes. But not in the scary way.
I don’t change faces, reshape bodies, or turn people into plastic dolls. My editing style is clean, natural, and polished, so your final images look professional without looking fake.
Think glow-up, not glow-over.
Your senior pictures should still feel like you. Just with fewer distractions, better lighting, natural skin tones, and all the little things cleaned up so the focus stays exactly where it belongs.
Your session doesn’t end when we stop shooting. Honestly, that’s when the real work begins. From helping you plan every detail before your session to carefully finishing each image afterward, it is all part of the full senior portrait experience.
I carefully go through every image from your session and remove anything with closed eyes, odd expressions, blurry movement, or in-between moments that just aren’t flattering.
What’s left is a curated collection of your very best photos, not just every photo taken. That way, when you see your gallery, it’s full of strong, natural, confident images that feel like you.
What Gets Edited (And Why It Matters)
Professional retouching isn’t a makeover — it’s a confidence boost. You’ll still look like you, just on your best day. Here’s what I take care of behind the scenes:
Skin (but keep it real)
• Temporary blemishes
• Small scratches
• Red spots and uneven tone
Not touched? Freckles, birthmarks, and natural texture. If it’s part of you, it stays!
Color & Lighting
• Fixing strange color tones
• Balancing light and shadows
• Bringing back sky detail
• Making skin tones look natural (aka no orange, gray, or alien vibes)
Removing Distractions
• Flyaway hairs
• Bra straps
• Wrinkled or bunched clothing
• People in the background
• Random street clutter
• Light poles trying to grow out of your head
Gone. Vanished. Peace out.
Cropping & Backgrounds
• Straightening horizons when needed
• Refining the crop so the image feels balanced
• Cleaning up or extending a background
• Enhancing color while keeping everything true to life
I use this spot often, but it looks so much better with a little background extension & cleanup.
Eyes & Details
• Subtle eye brightening
• Sharper lashes and brows
• Teeth cleaned up (not glowing)
What Doesn’t Get Changed
You will not log in and think, “Who is that?” Because I do not:
• Reshape bodies
• Change facial features
• Alter your natural look
• Filter you into a different person
• Smooth you until your skin is plastic

Your final photos will still feel like you, just confident, refreshed, and put together. The goal is never to create a new version of you — it’s to make sure the real you shines without distractions.
Do You Adjust The Sky In Senior Pictures?
Nope, that’s Arizona showing off. 😂
The beautiful skies in my senior pictures are created in camera, not added later. That includes the big colorful sunsets, the bright blue daytime skies, the clouds, the light flare, and all those little moments when Arizona decides to be extra.
When I photograph a senior outside, I am paying attention to more than just their face. I am also watching the sky, the direction of the light, the background, and how everything is going to work together in the final image.
That is a huge part of how to choose the right location for senior pictures—not just picking somewhere pretty, but choosing a place that gives us the right light, backgrounds, and overall feel.
At sunset, I use additional lighting to properly light my senior while exposing for the sky behind them. That is why you can see both a bright, happy senior and all those gorgeous sunset colors at the same time.
Without extra lighting, I would have to choose between exposing for the senior and losing the sky, or exposing for the sky and having the senior look dark. Nighttime senior pictures may look effortless, but trust me, there is a whole lot happening behind the scenes to make that magic happen.
The same idea applies during the day. A bright Arizona sky can easily turn white in a photo if it is not photographed correctly. Knowing how to balance the light means I can keep the blue sky, clouds, and detail that were really there while still making sure my senior looks great.
Seventeen years of experience means I know how to properly light my clients without losing the beautiful sky around them. The final edit may include small color and contrast adjustments, or cleanup for a random contrail or distracting line, but the vivid colors, dramatic light, and balanced final image all start at the session.
The sky, truck, and light in this image were all real. The finished edit simply cleaned up a few little distractions so the final image feels polished without changing the moment we created.

That is one of the biggest differences professional lighting can make. It is not just about taking a pretty photo. It is knowing how to create an image where the light on you, the sky behind you, and the feeling of the moment all work together.
Natural Is Always Welcome Here
Read this slowly: you do not have to wear makeup, dress fancy, or be anything other than yourself.
If you love glam, bring it. If you are a hoodie-and-lip-gloss kind of senior, perfect. If zero makeup is your thing, I’ve got you. Natural curls, straight hair, freckles everywhere, braces, glasses, bare-faced, minimal makeup, all of it is welcome here.
No makeup? No problem! This is your senior season, not a makeover show.
Need a little help deciding what feels most like you? Start with what to wear for senior pictures and build from there.
Editing does not add beauty. It simply cleans up the little things that pull attention away from it. I can soften a temporary blemish, even out skin tone, clean up a distraction, or brighten the overall image without erasing the things that make you look like you.
You will not leave looking filtered, fake, or like someone else.
You will leave looking like yourself on a really, really good day.
What About Glasses Glare And Transition Lenses?
Glasses glare can be sneaky.
I cannot tell you how many times we have caught the most amazing real laugh, the kind you cannot fake if you tried, and there is light reflecting right across the lenses. Ugh.
The good news is that editing tools have come a long way. Like, a really long way. Especially in the last 2-3 years.
I can often remove or soften glare so you can see the eyes and expression that were there all along. And no, that is not AI. It is simply using better tools, plus a whole lot of careful editing, to clean up the image without changing the person.
Transition lenses can be a little trickier because they darken outside, especially in bright Arizona light. When possible, I recommend popping the lenses out before your session.
Your eye doctor can usually pop them out and put them back in for you, and a lot of my clients have a second pair of frames they use just for pictures. That gives us the look they love without having to fight dark lenses or reflections the whole session.
But do not panic if taking the lenses out is not an option. I will still watch for glare, change angles when I can, and do everything possible to make sure your eyes and your expression are the part everyone notices first.
And Yes, Sometimes We Shoot In Parking Lots
Listen, some of my favorite After Dark images happen in parking lots. 😂
They give us open space, cool lines, room for cars, and plenty of freedom to play with light. The final image might look like it belongs in a movie, but behind the scenes? There may be parking lines, light stands, random signs, poles, and all the very real stuff that comes with shooting in an actual parking lot.
That is where a little cleanup helps.
But it also shows that not everything is “Photoshopped.”
This image of Zach turned into one of my favorites from his session. We were shooting in a parking lot, playing with headlights and all that crazy light flare. The before and after shows you exactly what was real and what was edited.
The headlights are real. The light flare is real. The dramatic lighting is real. The cleanup is simply there to remove the things that were never supposed to be part of the final image, like distracting parking lines, light stands, or little background clutter.
That is the difference between creating a photo and faking one.
Real Example: Before & After Senior Picture Magic
Here’s what natural professional retouching actually looks like:
Before is a great photo with distractions pulling your eye everywhere. After is clean, balanced, natural, and focused where it should be: on the senior. No filters, no face changes, just professional polish.
Jaydin didn’t really need much retouching other than a few little flyaways, but we were in a busy public space. And me, paying attention to my senior instead of the surroundings, actually left one of my assistants in the background. Oops!
The Best Photos Happen When You Feel Like Yourself
Confidence doesn’t come from Photoshop — it comes from feeling comfortable. FYI, almost everyone shows up a little nervous, but that won’t last long, I promise! Because when you feel good, everything softens naturally. Your smile shows up easier, your posture relaxes, your expressions feel real, and suddenly your photos actually look like you. No awkward posing. No pressure to perform. No pretending to be someone else. Just laughs, hype, and a few “wait…that’s me?!” moments when you see the back of the camera.
And here’s where editing really matters — not to change you, but to protect that feeling. Your senior photos aren’t just for right now. They’re for graduation announcements, wall art, photo albums, and your future self who will look back and smile. Professional editing doesn’t shout. It quietly says wow by removing distractions and letting your confidence be the focus.

That’s my promise to you.
I won’t reshape your body or change your face. I won’t smooth your skin until you look fake, filtered, or like a completely different person.
I will clean up distractions, keep your skin looking natural, soften the things that don’t need to be remembered, and create finished images that feel honest, confident, and beautifully you.
Because senior pictures are not about becoming someone else.
They’re about seeing yourself clearly, maybe even a little more confidently than you did before.

FAQ: Natural Senior Picture Retouching
Do you Photoshop senior pictures?
Yes, but naturally. I clean up temporary blemishes, small distractions, odd background details, glasses glare when possible, and little things that pull attention away from you. I do not reshape bodies, change facial features, or turn anyone into someone they do not recognize.
Will you remove acne or blemishes?
Temporary blemishes, scratches, redness, and other short-term things are usually cleaned up. Freckles, birthmarks, natural texture, and the things that are simply part of you stay.
Can you fix glasses glare in senior pictures?
Often, yes. I watch for glare while we are shooting, change angles when I can, and can often soften or remove reflections in editing. Transition lenses can be trickier, so a second pair of frames or removable lenses can help when that is an option.
Do you change the sky in senior pictures?
No. Arizona gives us some pretty incredible skies, and those colors are photographed in camera. I may make small color, contrast, or cleanup adjustments, but I am not dropping in fake sunsets or replacing the sky.
Will you remove people, poles, parking lines, or distractions from the background?
When it makes sense for the final image, yes. Things like background clutter, poles, signs, stray people, parking lines, and little distractions can often be cleaned up so the attention stays on your senior.
