Are Senior Pictures Worth It? One Mom’s Honest Perspective

Senior pictures are an investment, so it makes sense to wonder whether they’re really worth it.

I could give you my answer as a senior photographer, but I think a parent who has been through the entire experience can answer that question even better.

Janelle first came to me for her daughter Marissa’s senior pictures and later became my blog writer—and, over the years, a friend. She originally wrote this post after experiencing senior portraits from the parent side of things. I’ve kept her story and her words because her perspective still says everything I want parents to know.

A Parent’s Perspective

I’m Janelle Stahl—writer by day, mom 24/7 to five kids, and also known around here as Marissa’s mom.

I’m going to take you behind the scenes and tell you exactly why I’m so glad we didn’t choose the cheapest option for our daughter’s senior portraits, and why we chose Magical Memories by Michelle instead.

This is my sweet girl, Marissa, who graduated from Red Mountain High School.

The Real Investment

Think of all the years you’ve spent supporting your kiddo as they’ve grown up—all the miles you’ve driven to practices, all the games you’ve cheered at, and all the events where you’ve stretched from the back row just trying to catch a glimpse.

Your soon-to-be-grad has put in so much time and effort becoming the amazing young person they are now. Senior pictures gave us a chance to capture all of those pieces of Marissa—her personality, her interests, her accomplishments, and this huge moment in her life—all at once.

When I looked at it that way, I knew investing in professional senior pictures was worth it.

Planning, Prepping & Paying: The Lowdown

I’ll tell you about our experience, and you can decide for yourself.

Was our photographer more expensive than some other photographers? Yup. But did I want another round of cookie-cutter studio photos with my kid’s hands clasped under her chin while she made awkward eye contact with the camera? No way.

You’ll always find photographers who charge more and photographers who charge less. But for us, recommendations from people who had genuinely loved their experience mattered more than finding the lowest price. That was one of the biggest reasons we chose Magical Memories by Michelle.

From day one, Michelle was focused on getting to know our family—especially Marissa. She wanted her to feel comfortable, have fun, and end up with senior pictures that felt like her.

And now that our little bird has left the nest and gone off to college, those photographs mean even more. We have them hanging throughout our home, along with a keepsake box filled with images from this season of her life. They’re reminders of exactly who she was right before everything began to change.

But Was It Worth It?

I’ll admit it—we spent more than we originally thought we would. Before the session, we figured it would be easy to choose a few favorite images, put together a collection, and call it a day.

That was adorable.

The hard part wasn’t deciding whether we loved the photos. It was deciding which ones we could possibly leave out.

We spent exactly what we were quoted for the session itself. The “problem” came later, when Marissa’s very proud parents decided we wanted far more of the finished images and keepsakes than we had originally planned. Were we glad we did it? Absolutely.

The One Thing All Moms Do

I’m one of those moms. For my first kiddo, I have Sears portrait packages dating all the way back to 1994, every six months, all stored neatly in a plastic tote. The second kiddo has her fair share in there too. It gets a little skimpier for the kids after that.

The years get busier, the days start flying by, and before you know it, those regular portrait sessions become fewer and farther between. I also faithfully purchased the school picture packages—twice a year, per kid. By now, I’m pretty sure I could have purchased a yacht. Okay, at least a really nice boat.

Care to guess where most of those pictures are now?

Yep. The plastic tote.

Why the Tote?

Because those pre-planned packages usually came with a whole lot of the exact same image—same expression, same pose, same awkward little head tilt.

If you were lucky, school pictures happened before recess. Otherwise, you were also the proud owner of photos featuring sweaty faces, dirt streaks, and hair doing things you didn’t even know were physically possible.

And there are only so many copies of the same picture you can hand out to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and anyone else willing to take one.

Those photos weren’t bad. They just weren’t the ones we displayed all over our home or kept going back to years later.

And Then Life Happens

The years have a funny way of sneaking up on you. One minute you’re dressing a little boy in a snap-bottom sailor suit for baby pictures, and the next he’s graduated from trade school. The redhead who dressed up as Ariel is married. And suddenly another one is getting ready to graduate.

Somewhere along the way, the regular portrait sessions gave way to everyday snapshots—often blurry, sometimes chaotic, but full of memories. As Marissa’s graduation approached, I realized there just weren’t as many photographs documenting these later years as I wished there were.

She was also going to be the first of my kids to leave home for college—and not just across town, but out of state. Maybe it was a little anticipatory homesickness. Maybe some mom guilt. Maybe both.

Whatever it was, when the topic of senior pictures came up, I was ALL IN.

Finding the Right Photographer

As luck would have it, I mentioned senior pictures in front of Michelle—yes, the Magical Memories one.

She told me how she works specifically with seniors, how every session is personalized, and how much she focuses on helping kids feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

That was very different from the portrait experiences I was used to.

So, of course, I went home and looked her up. I checked out her work, read through her reviews, and started to understand why families recommended her so highly.

The Big Difference

I already knew Michelle was a talented photographer, and I also knew she wasn’t the least expensive option.

What I wanted to understand was what we would be getting for that investment that we wouldn’t get from taking the pictures ourselves or choosing a more basic portrait experience.

It turned out the difference was much bigger than I expected!

Here’s what I learned

I quickly realized we weren’t just paying for someone to show up with a camera.

There was so much more to it than I expected:

• Time with Michelle before the session to talk through ideas and make a plan
• Help figuring out outfits, including her Style Guides and Style Closet
• Recommendations for hair and makeup
• Location ideas based on Marissa and what she wanted (Michelle knows all the best spots!)
• Michelle telling her exactly what to do so she never had to wonder how to stand or what to do with her hands
• Retouching that still looked like my daughter
• Beautiful finished artwork we could enjoy long after senior year was over

What surprised me even more was how much the experience itself mattered.

I already knew my daughter was beautiful and talented, but I got to see another side of her that day—one I’m not sure I would have seen if she hadn’t been working with Michelle.

The Transformation

I don’t know how to explain it. Michelle has a way with these kids.

I’ve watched her work with Marissa and other seniors, and she has a way of making them forget about the camera, the worried mom standing nearby, the makeup bag, the phone, and everything else competing for their attention.

When we first stepped into the ditch—and yes, it was prettier than it sounds—Marissa was a little stiff. She may even have been “tromping like an elephant,” although Michelle would only say that with love.

But within minutes, the two of them were laughing, talking, and completely in their own little world. The stress disappeared. The awkwardness disappeared. Even Mom pretty much disappeared.

I got to stand back and watch Michelle photograph the daughter I had known for 18 years—the same girl, but somehow with this confident, carefree side of her coming through right in front of me.

Marissa was standing on the edge of everything: graduation, college, competitive diving, a career, a whole future she was excited to step into.

And somehow, while I was looking at this almost-grown woman, I could still see the little girl with freckles and curls who carried a very ladylike purse full of pacifiers when she was four years old. Gotta be prepared.

Michelle’s Magic

That’s what stayed with me most about the session.

Michelle didn’t just photograph what Marissa looked like. She photographed so many of the little things that made her Marissa—the glint in her eye, the goofy head tilt, the way she laughed, the things she loved, even her bond with her dog, Savannah.

We had fun. We laughed. We were exhausted. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, I got to watch my daughter relax into the same carefree, lighthearted person I had always known at home.

And when it was over, we didn’t walk away with stacks of identical prints that would end up in another plastic tote.

We chose artwork we wanted to live with: a beautiful image box, a wall collage, prints to share with family, and digital images we could keep and enjoy too.

To my previous two kiddos: Mom is very, very sorry. I do have some lovely graduation snapshots from about twenty rows back—complete with the back of a stranger’s head.

Was It Worth It?

Yes, yes, and YES! Michelle’s way of capturing every nuance of Marissa’s personality was truly magical, and I’m so grateful that we will always have the professional images of our girl as she was getting ready to make her way out into the great-big world! Thank you, Michelle!

Because 17 or 18 feels incredibly grown up…until a few years later, when you look back at those pictures and realize just how young they really were.
