Skateboard Grind to Evening Glam: Capture Every Side of Your Personality

Wanna know the beauty of what makes us all unique individuals? Nobody has just one thing that defines them! Meet Janaye. A 2021 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in Queen Creek, Arizona, she’s all things sporty and adventurous, and everyone who knows her says she’s never afraid to embrace her silly, goofy side.

That’s how she introduced herself, but as I got to know this gorgeous young lady, I learned really quickly there was a whole lot more to her!

Top Queen Creek Senior Portrait Photographer

Over the years as a professional photographer, I’ve met clients in a lot of different ways. I was out on a photo shoot with another client when Janaye’s mom happened upon us. We were working on nighttime photos at San Tan, and after briefly chatting, she mentioned she was having trouble finding someone to do a day-to-night graduation session. We exchanged information, and it wasn’t long before we were talking in earnest about a session for Janaye!

Personality That Won’t Quit

Janaye’s personality absolutely bubbles, and I was excited to work with her as soon as I met her. You can see from the first photo collage she goes from a sweet smile with dimples to a bit of a sassier look with an alluring peek over her dark sunglasses. There are so many facets to her personality, and let me tell you, this young lady can pull off plaid and denim like I’ve never seen! She turns the look into a feminine fashion statement by topping it with perfectly finished makeup, hair, and nails.

Sunshine & Smiles

Listing desert landscapes as one of her preferences, we set out to find the most picturesque of locations. Janaye brought several outfit changes along for her photo shoot, and this denim dress has to be one of my favorites for its chic yet simple look.

First of all, Janaye knows what works for her! She chose outfits that work well for her shape and body type, and the way the light blue denim stands out from the natural background is perfect.

Amazing Queen Creek Senior Picture Photographer

When you’re choosing the outfits you’ll wear for your graduation photos, be sure to select pieces that make you feel confident and beautiful. Janaye exudes confidence in this dress, which adds so much to the beauty of these photos.

Flipkicks & Fearless Style

When she’s not studying or watching movies with friends, you’ll likely find Janaye on her skateboard. One of her favorite hobbies, she’s cool and confident—both riding the board and carrying it to her next skating location. And check out her skating style! She effortlessly pulls of casual denim, a print tee, and black Vans as she shows off her moves with lush florals and green grass as a background. (Yes, we have all that right here in the desert!)

I have an entire network of beauty professionals who are ready to help clients get ready for their professional photo shoots. From hair and makeup to spray tans and nails, I’ve got you covered! Janaye chose to have her hair styled and her makeup applied by Deb. She also opted to add to her already gorgeous glow by booking a spray tan with Christina. All of my clients have several options when it comes to amping up their looks with the help of my network, so don’t hesitate to ask!

Future’s So Bright…

Best Queen Creek Senior Portrait Photographer

I love this look so much! You can just imagine Janaye glancing behind her with a flirty dip of her shades and then strolling confidently toward her future. She’s smiling and strong and ready for whatever the world has in store!

And trust me, this young lady has plenty of dreams on her bucket list. Her career goal is to become a flight attendant and see the world. But on top of that, she wants to sky dive and swim with sharks. If anyone ever doubted her sense of adventure, that should clear it right up. With her boundless energy and bold spirit, don’t be surprised at whatever she’s up to next!

Going Glam with Nighttime Photos

Did you know you can glam things up without ditching your relatively casual wardrobe? Yep! Janaye pulls this off perfectly, and I’m going to tell you how.

Queen Creek Senior Picture Photographer Night

A quick switch to black denim and a black leather jacket adds just enough nighttime sophistication to change the entire attitude of the photo shoot. Janaye goes from casual and sporty to sophisticated and stylish in the blink of an eye with just a couple quick changes!

The evening lighting captures the perfect contouring of her makeup, which is why I had to get a close-up shot of her looking off to the side. And she stands apart from the fading background lights in her white tank with the jacket casually tossed over a shoulder.

It only takes a few minor changes to completely change the mood of a session, and that’s exactly what we did! I’m so thrilled with the multiple looks Janaye was able to pull off, and I’m beyond excited to be able to deliver a photo package that represents ALL of her amazing personality traits.

Day or Night…Still a Skater

Senior Pictures Skateboard Night Queen Creek AZ

Think she put down that skateboard just because the sun went down? Think again! For this photo, she kept the leather jacket and pulled her skateboard in close for a candid photo that shows off her very favorite pastime. It just goes to show you can never take the skater out of the girl…which is pretty cool!

And Then Came the Dress

You may want to sit down for this last photo. It’s stunning. And fabulous. And spectacular.

And completely out of Janaye’s comfort zone. But would you just look at how lovely she looks in this red formal dress?

In just a few hours, we went from daytime skater girl to complete and total glam!

Queen Creek Senior Picture Photographer

She may not think she’s a “dress girl,” but Janaye looks so natural in this scarlet dress with her long hair resting on her shoulders. Her casual pose with her arms crossed on her knees makes it look like she’s comfortable glamming it up every day of the week!

According to her, wearing a dress to a dance has been her biggest accomplishment, but I’d say she’s already done a whole lot in her young life. As a graduate, I asked her if she had any advice to incoming freshmen. Her answer? “Be involved as much as you can and make plans.” And boy does this young woman have plans!

Go get ‘em, Janaye! Can’t wait to hear you say, “We did it, Joe.”

Share Photo Memories & Give Gifts From the Heart

It’s that time of year…the time when we all scramble around trying to decide if our grandma would rather have another new scarf or a cute kitchen towel set. Fuzzy blankets abound. Stacks of slippers and wallets and coffee mugs crowd store aisles as gifting go-tos, but if you’ve had your senior picture photo shoot, you’ve got a serious advantage this holiday season. Wanna know why?

Gift-Giving Genius at Your Fingertips

You have a beautiful collection of professional pictures, and that means you have a treasure trove of possibilities in front of you to make sure everyone from Great Aunt Edith to Grandpa Fred gets marvelously merry presents from you! Pssst…I know a secret. Wanna know what Grandma wants for Christmas? She wants a photo of you!

Keepsake Book Inside Graduation Photo Gifts

The great part is you’ve already done the legwork. You’ve worked hard, gotten through your senior year, and participated in a magnificent photo shoot, so why not share memories of your achievements with the ones you love?

Endless Options, Creative Gifting

All of you who’ve been in my office have seen the wide range of products that are available. I keep a variety of options for print and display for a few reasons, one of them being so you’ll have lots of ways to share your images with family and friends. It just so happens that Christmas is the perfect time to do that!

Erica Image Box

From image boxes to collages and storyboards to metal prints, you can be as creative as you want to be with your gifting. You can do anything from single prints to digital displays, and you can choose wall-mounted or table-top photo gifts. With so many options, everyone’s gift can be a little different—or keep them all the same if that suits your fancy!

Erica Image Box with Ribbon

Another reason I offer such a large variety of products is because no two families (or family members!) are alike, and that means while Mom and Dad may be in love with the image box full of photos, a single metal print may be perfect for an uncle or a grandpa.

Heirloom Quality Keepsakes

When you display or give photo gifts from Magical Memories by Michelle, you’ll be guaranteed the highest quality items. I never order products for my customers without first ordering samples for myself to review them and ensure every detail lives up to the high standards I have for every image and product. The upside of this is that you’ll always get a hands-on experience with every product in my office before ordering, and you’ll know exactly what you’re getting.

Graduation Photos Gifts Keepsakes

Check out this jolly list of 5 Great Reasons to Give Photo Gifts This Year that’ll give you a few more reasons to slip your graduation pics under the tree. You’re bound to add some jingle to everyone’s day when you do!

  1. Photos are a great way to give a meaningful gift. They capture a moment in time and remind friends and family members of how special they are to you. After all, you thought of THEM in your photo planning process.
  2. Pictures are instant keepsakes. They are personal, and when you give them, you’re gifting something they’ll keep and cherish. I’ve gotten a LOT of fuzzy socks over the years, and I LOVE them, but there aren’t many pairs of them I’ve kept as heirlooms to pass down to future generations. That’s the beauty of photos! They last forever.
  3. You’re guaranteed not to give a duplicate gift. Nobody can walk down a department store aisle and choose the photo gift you’re giving! Grandma may get six jingle bell sweaters, but she’ll only get ONE wall collage of your graduation memories. Professional photos are a unique, one-of-a-kind way to remind someone how special they are to you.
  4. You don’t have to fight the holiday rush. While throngs of people are crowding into malls and discount stores, you can sit right in the comfort of your own home and select the photo gifts you want to give to friends and family. Enjoy your warm slippers, a cup of cocoa, and a Christmas movie while everyone else is out there fighting their way through crowds like salmon trying to swim upstream.
  5. You can start a new tradition. Holiday gifts don’t always have to come from the store. In fact, the very best gifts come from the heart. What if you started a new tradition with family and friends to exchange photos every year to help you stay in touch and connected with each other?

I believe Dr. Seuss said it best:

“Maybe Christmas,” the Grinch thought, “doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more.”

It Doesn’t Stop with the Photo Shoot

What I do doesn’t stop when I snap the last photo at each shoot. I love that every photo becomes and instant keepsake and can be shared for years to come.

Dashing Senior Pictures | Effortlessly Casual Poses for Senior Guys

It seems like girls have a gazillion poses and outfit ideas about a year in advance of their senior pictures, but it’s not always the same for guys. For the guys, it usually goes one of two ways. Either they are totally ok with the idea of professional photos and go all-out posing and putting their personality into it—or they suddenly forget what to do with their hands and feet and end up looking like they’re trying to walk in their very first pair of shoes.

It’s not their fault…guys just generally haven’t been exposed to the level of photos and selfies and camera readiness as girls.

Hello, Camera!

When I met Noah, I was pleasantly surprised by his outgoing nature and willingness to jump in and work with me and the camera! Whether he was smiling or going for a super-serious look, this guy was photogenic from beginning to end…and there wasn’t a shot he couldn’t pull off.

Chandler High School Graduation Photography Guys

He was in for the long haul, too. With a 3+-hour photo shoot and multiple locations, there was a day full of smiles, posing, dapper looks, goofy grins, and everything in between waiting for him…and he took it all in stride!

Sunshine & Suits

This guy looks perfectly at home in a suit and tie, which is a good thing since he’s set his sights on a career as a lawyer. Even under the Arizona sun, he keeps his cool while strolling over this bridge and gazing off toward whatever the future has in store for him! I love the slightly more casual look when he’s sitting backwards in a chair without his jacket. Because after a long, hard day, what legal eagle doesn’t ditch his jacket and tie and roll his shirtsleeves up to relax?

Remember This Moment

Noah is a 2021 graduate from Desert Ridge High School in Mesa, Arizona, and in addition to his educational accomplishments, he was a member of the State Swim & Dive Team! Of course, showing off his school letter was a mandatory shot for senior pictures. It’s not easy to earn a letter, and that feeling of accomplishment is something he’ll likely never forget. We paired his team jacket with the letter as a prop, and because Noah is so photogenic—both while showing off a smile AND a serious face—I had to capture both for his portrait collection.

Let’s Talk About the Hair

Guys may think they don’t need to worry about it as much, but take a look at Noah’s fantastic haircut and groomed eyebrows! Sure, they don’t take as long to get ready as the ladies…and they don’t have all the hair to curl and spray and style, BUT it’s important to get your look right for senior pictures. Noah nailed it with his casual and modern style that works perfectly with both dressy and dressed-down outfits!

Sun Devils, Here He Comes!

A future Sun Devil, Noah showed off his relaxed style with an Arizona State tee. Paired with black jeans, red Vans, and shades, he looks ready to roll onto campus with confidence.

Keeping it Cool

In this outfit swap, Noah went for a black tee, black shades, and black denim—and if it weren’t for his charming smile, we might have thought he was an international spy or art smuggler! On trend and ready for everything, this outfit choice shows off Noah’s bold side and seems perfectly suited for his bucket-list item of traveling the world and seeing historical sites along the way. Switzerland is a big one on his list, too, but I’m pretty sure this style is global…so go ahead and book your tickets, Noah!

Accomplishments & Advice

I should shout this from the rooftop, but I’ll just yell it right here:

That’s pretty amazing, and it means he’s pretty darn smart.

Asked if he has any advice for incoming freshman, he says to do every single assignment and don’t fall behind.

Final Thoughts: Graduation Photos for Guys

There are a few things you can do if you are working with clients who are nervous about their senior photos! Likely, they’re nervous because they don’t know what to do and they feel overwhelmed. If you go in prepared and have tons of great ideas and things for your client to focus on, shots will turn out better. Here are some ideas. Give him:

  1. Something to Lean On: Most of the time, when clients are nervous about posing in front of the camera, they don’t know what to do with their limbs. Give them a wall or a car or a door to lean on, and you’ll solve a huge part of the problem.
  2. Somewhere to Sit: Same thing here. If your client is standing around and fidgeting, consider finding them someplace to sit until they feel less nervous in front of the camera. Sitting feels natural and automatically feels like they have something to do.
  3. Somebody to Smile At: Don’t just ask clients to smile into thin air. Ask them to imagine smiling at someone—or better yet, have your assistant smile or pretend to tell them a joke. It works!
  4. Someplace to Hang Out: How about a restaurant or a park bench or even the school bleachers? If clients feel comfortable in the space you give them, they’ll relax and give you more natural expressions.
  5. Something to Hold: Fidgety hands are the worst! If you’re working with a guy who plays basketball, have him hold the ball. Same goes for artists, musicians, and gamers. When you give clients something to do with their hands, the need to fidget dissipates.

Way to Go, Noah!

It was so much fun to work with Noah! He was charming, outgoing, and funny—and so willing to work with me to get perfect photos that his family and friends would love. With his smarts and dynamic personality, I know he’ll go far. I can’t wait to see what’s next for you, Noah!

Your High School Senior Photo Shoot: A Not-So-Top-Secret Look Behind the Scenes

Everyone wants to know—but not everyone wants to ask—“What in the world actually happens at a photo shoot?” I’m about to give you the inside scoop so you’ll be ready to tackle your day with enthusiasm and kick the nerves to the curb. Hint: It’s probably a mix of some of the things you were thinking and a surprising amount of things you hadn’t even dreamed up. Trust me, your day in front of the camera lens is going to be all you imagined…and then some.

After a session, I often gets comments like these:

  • “Wow! That isn’t what I was expecting at all!”
  • “That was much easier than I thought it would be!”
  • “I had such a great time! I didn’t expect it to be so much fun!”

After years of being a professional photographer, what happens during a photo shoot (EVERY photo shoot) is normal to me but not always obvious to graduating seniors. So I thought I’d revisit this post and share some behind-the-scenes insight and the planning that goes into your senior portrait session.

Start with an In-Person Consultation

I like to start with a phone consultation so you’ll know if we’re a good fit. If you want just some quick photos, I might not be the right photographer for you…and that’s OK! Once we talk, you’ll get a feel for my enthusiasm and creativity, plus I’ll get to learn more about you and your teenager. Seriously, even if you choose another photographer, having a great 15-minute conversation is never a bad thing, right? All that sounds great, so let’s set up a consultation where we can meet in person or over Zoom. This plays a HUGE part in the success of your photo shoot. It takes time to warm up in front of the camera and that is a lot easier if we’re on the same page.

Unlike other photographers that meet you in a parking lot the day of the shoot, I’d love to meet ahead of time to get to know each other. You get to tell me what you want, see sample sessions, and get ideas for your session. You’ll also have a chance to touch and see the beautiful product line. But don’t worry, no decisions are required yet; I just want to get to know you so it will be like having a best friend behind the camera making sure you look fabulous!

If you’d like more information, this link will tell you how to get started for your senior pictures. I still have some availability for Class of 2022, and Class of 2023 will start consultations in the spring.

Choosing a Location

Don’t worry; you don’t have to choose just one! I like to wander during sessions to find unique spots. Sometimes you find a hidden gem when you least expect it, so bring comfy walking shoes. We’ll move around a lot during your photo shoot so I can capture you with as many different backgrounds and environments as possible. If we’re in a downtown area, we’ll easily walk several blocks to find the best locations for you.

Sometimes we go to popular areas like the Riparian Preserve or Nichols Park. Downtown Gilbert or a small local park are great because they are often less crowded, and we’re able to get more creative shots and use the great backgrounds and colors that nature provides. Most high school seniors like a combination of both natural elements AND a bit of the urban environment. When you’re with me, we cover a lot of ground—and that means we get a wide variety of shots.

C’mon, let’s take a look behind the scenes of what will make up your amazingly fun photo shoot!

Behind the Scenes

We typically arrive at our first location between 3:00-4:00 in the afternoon, depending on the weather, the sun, and the locations you’ve chosen. We’ll go through your outfits to determine which outfit will give the best vibes, which ones are “must-haves,” and you’ll use my portable changing room to change into your first outfit. I’ll set up the equipment and take some test shots, and then we’ll be ready to capture some amazing shots of you in action!

In this shoot from 2019, I am working with Trevor, a 17-year-old basketball athlete from Mesquite High School, and his mother, Gina. During our session, Gina snapped a few pictures of Trevor’s session, and I thought it would be fun to show some behind-the-scenes pictures compared to the final senior portraits.

This red wall really isn’t anything special, but when paired with Trevor’s flannel shirt, the headshot is great! Couple that with some prompts to get that genuine smile, and it’s a win for both of us!

Ideas for Senior Pictures for a Basketball Player

While other photographers rush through sessions and use basic posing, I love trying new and creative ideas! Of course we do some beautiful headshots, but I try to do something new at every senior session. This way you’re guaranteed to have unique, fun, authentic senior pictures. I don’t have behind-the-scenes samples of this particular shot, but I had to include it because it ended up being one of Trevor’s favorite images. As much as I’d love to, I can’t move the sun, and for this shot, it just worked better to have him spin the ball…with his LEFT hand! Yeah, that was fun! It might have been a challenge, but look at the outcome. Worth it? I think so!

It’s All About Lighting

If you’re gonna do basketball pictures, you need a basketball court. Gina told me about a great park near their home with a nice basketball court. While this was a great opportunity to highlight Trevor’s love of basketball, I needed to assess the location and lighting—and we had to be careful because often, neighborhood parks can be crowded, making it tough to get the shots we’re after.

Gina was able to snap a few casual pics for me so that I could determine the layout of the park, including potential lighting issues, landscaping, and other details. The park was at street level with a lot of trees, so I instantly knew I could shoot great photos without houses distracting the scene. Score!

It’s not uncommon to find me climbing a ladder or laying on the ground to get the exact shot I want. Sometimes we just get creative and see what the results are. These shots really show what it’s like behind the scenes!

As the sun went down and we were done with action shots, it was time to pull out the lights. Since Gina is a huge Dallas Cowboys fan, she also chose to paint a ball silver and the results were even better than we’d hoped!

After Dark

We were having such a great time we kept shooting after dark. After a quick uniform change, we captured even more unique basketball shots. The sun sets quickly, and with the off-camera lighting, we can choose how much of the background to include in each photo, offering plenty of variety.

Trendy Night Shots

If you want nighttime portraits—a popular photo trend for the Class of 2022—then we continue shooting into the evening. Downtown Gilbert is a favorite nighttime location, even if it’s just the edge of a parking lot or parking garage!

Highlighting Your Hobbies and Interests

Many high school seniors choose to include their sports because it might be the final games of their career. Trevor added basketball in several ways. We chose to start with Trevor’s Mesquite High School uniform (shown above) and a standard basketball. You want your senior in a suit and tie? No problem! It’s an incredible look and trust me, the guys love it when we combine this snazzy look with their favorite sport.

You Don’t Play Sports?

This is actually a very common concern with my high school seniors. “But I don’t play sports. I’m not active in clubs. I’m just a regular teenager.” One solution is to include your favorite pro sports team, as Trevor did. Now, his was even more awesome because he has a personalized Phoenix Suns jersey! However, any of your favorite sports teams would work. Don’t overlook your college team!

Or how about the college you’re planning to attend? It just so happens that Trevor got an academic scholarship to the University of Arizona in Tucson!

Finishing the Photo Session

Most daytime photo shoots take 2 – 3 hours. I like to end the day by making sure we have at least 35 great shots. A checklist includes basic poses, close-up shots, and even some candid fun and funny shots of you being your quirky self. Whatever makes your personality shine through, that’s what I’m looking for—and that’s what I’ll capture in senior portraits.

Your memories of high school should be cherished. I will work with you to create a modern, authentic plan. When you trust me to capture your look, personality, and style in high-quality professional images, you’ll be proud to share your high school portraits with friends and family!

The BEST Way to Remember Your Senior Portrait Session: The Heirloom Album!

I’ve been a Phoenix photographer for almost 13 years and I believe your photos are meant to be printed. Today I want to share my heirloom albums…they are gorgeous!! I’ve been offering custom artwork since I opened Magical Memories by Michelle in 2009, and my clients want printed products. If you’ve seen my products, you know that the majority of them are printed on high quality crystal silk photographic paper but finding an album with silk pages was no easy task. While I did find some beautiful albums, none of them offered silk pages. Then I found this beauty! It has quickly become a client favorite and is a great keepsake for your senior portrait session!

Your Favorite Portraits

How often do you pull the USB out and look through images from your photo shoots? How much have you really printed? I know you’ve had the best of intentions, but you’re busy and all of a sudden it’s been 5 years and the USB from your family pictures is still in the desk drawer, untouched. Of course those first couple of days were amazing with all the likes and comments on social media, right? But now what? Unlike other photographers who offer just digital images, I offer premium artwork that you can’t get anywhere else, and that includes these stunning albums that with full page spreads…no seams or gutters! Each page is pressed and mounted to create an album that will make you squeal with excitement. I know you want to remember everything about senior year, so this makes it much easier to have a simple way to showcase your entire session!  And here’s an added bonus. If you have digital images from any photo shoot, I can create an album with those too, as long as you have a print release.

High End Phoenix Photographer

High End, Heirloom Quality

With the layflat pages, you can spread a single image across both pages with no visible seam. Yes, these albums do have a lifetime guarantee. The pages are thick, similar to our mounted prints, and won’t easily bend or tear. I’ve heard of cheap albums falling apart after being opened only once or twice. All our products are guaranteed, including our albums. These are your memories and I want you to feel confident that your beloved portraits can be passed down for generations.

Finest Quality Silk Paper

Ok, so why the fuss over silk paper? One reason I love these prints is that they have very deep color tones and are just so vibrant! The texture is unlike anything other photographic papers available. In fact, many professional labs don’t even offer silk prints. One of the biggest reasons I love silk is that it is fingerprint resistant. My product line is meant to be enjoyed by your family for years to come, so it’s extremely important to me that they hold up well. An album isn’t meant to just sit on a shelf. I want it displayed in your home and so will you! I want your family to sit around and look through the album together. I want you to have that quality time remembering your senior at this age…without the worry of damaging your album. With silk pages, the fingerprints simply wipe off with a clean cloth. Notice I said clean, NOT wet! Just a dry cloth will remove those pesky fingerprints. That way, as your teenager leaves the nest and heads to college, you’ll have this gorgeous keepsake to look through when the reality hits. Just don’t get tears on it!

Photographic Cover

With so many designs and a beautiful black binding, these albums will match nearly any decor. Simply choose your favorite image for the cover and we’ll add any text, name, graduation year, or quote to personalize your luxury album. This will be a treasure for in your family for years.  The album will be custom designed with your favorite images and is easily displayed on a decorative easel instead of being packed away.
